Yog, in a general sense, encompasses various paths such as Karma Yog, Bhakti Yog, Raj Yog, Jnan Yog, Hath Yog, Mantra Yog, Laya Yog, or Kundalini Yog. In a more specific sense, it refers to Ashtang Yog or Raj Yog as outlined by Patanjali Maharishi. The term "yog" also extends to all practices and elements that contribute to the ultimate realization of yog, leading indirectly to liberation or perfection. A practitioner who attains the final asamprajnata samadhi or union with Reality is known as a yogi, while one striving for perfection in yog is also termed a yogi. Yog philosophy is part of the six systems of Hindu philosophy, distinguished by its practical nature. It is considered a precise science grounded in immutable Laws of Nature. Widely respected across the globe, especially among those interested in Eastern civilization, it is revered for holding the key to peace, bliss, mystery, and miracles. Yog represents a state of Absolute Peace devoid of imagination or thought. It involves mastery over the mind and its fluctuations, guiding individuals towards liberation. By teaching the regulation of the mind's modifications, yog facilitates the transformation of one's nature to attain a divine state. It suppresses the tendency of the mind to engage with external stimuli, leading to freedom from suffering, the cycle of rebirth, and granting divine powers and ultimate liberation through intuitive knowledge. Equanimity, serenity, and skillful actions are all manifestations of yog. Any endeavor that leads to the highest form of life is considered yog, encompassing holistic development of body, mind, and soul. Yog is fundamentally a way of life, not detached from reality. It does not entail renouncing action but emphasizes efficient performance with the right mindset. Rather than escaping from society, yog involves reshaping one's relationship with home and community. It does not reject life but aims for its spiritualization. Courtesy: Yoga, The Divine Life Trust Society Authored by: Swami Sivananda
